That is where I learnt about music; playing video games and watching endless reruns of cartoons and American TV shows. Television gave me shelter when I was alone, nursed me with Hollywood's mythologies. It guided me through nameless countries; with it I brought down colossuses and climbed mountains. I preached its beliefs. But when I grew up, all my heroes died. Today, I still come to mourn in deserted movie theatres. There, lights flash before my eyes. But I don't feel anything in face of the latest blockbusters and their visual explosions, these chaotic clusters where Mechas and Kaijus pile up in between fights under the rain, tsunamis and apocalyptic scenes. Yet I feel numb, except for the roaring sub-basses that fill the void of cinemas. My music is for those who, like me, have grown up amongst the ruins of blockbusters. Soul Food 10. Rollin' With My Blues 11. Devil's Slide 12. Just Your Fool Elvin Bishop's significant blues contributions are undeniable. On "Bossman", his insubstantial vocals and garish rhythms do not live up to expectation. Bishop is all about having fun, and for forty minutes his guitar, vocals, and songwriting are amusing and entertaining. Due to his light-hearted lyrics, you stop taking him, and his creative band, seriously. However, since entertainment is supposed to make you forget your grim problems, this just may be the temporary cure you are searching for. Half of the songs are originals. The other half are covers by the likes of Oden, McCracklin, and Jacobs. Bishop's lighthearted takes on classics like "Come On In This House" don't work well. "Fannie Mae" contains poignant harp and rockin' slide that cuts like Elmore James. All along, the jumpy horns sound extracted from the Big Joe Turner revue. Bishop plays heavy guitar atop a bopping rhythm on "Kissing In The Dark." Here the sax blows into the stratosphere, while the rest of the horns contain New Orleans seasoning. The instrumental, "Devil's Slide" is a highlight. Bishop can tell stories with the best of them. That is exactly what he does on "My Whiskey Head Buddies" which displays his boisterous showmanship. "You Got To Rock 'Em" contains rappin' rock with a funk groove. Lyrics like: ("They got to like you better than liquor, dope, and watching TV") reveals Bishop's mindset on what his audience comes to see/hear, and why he is such a flamboyant showman. Bishop's vocals cackle, but his guitar entices. Randy Forrester's piano is outstanding. In fact, it is omnipresent, and fills gaps the band doesn't know exists. These 12 tunes can be classified as blues-based roots rock, although overall Bishop is difficult to label on this album. That is a complement. Following up his debut album "For Evelyn" back in 2015, "Dancing On Soda Lake" continues confidently in the unique and personal style of music that Wren has carved out for himself over the years. By blending traditional guitar-and-voice songwriting with field recording and tape collage experimentation, Kitz has developed a ghostly and contemplative form of musical expression all his own that breaks down walls between genre categorizations. Together with a newly-assembled band consisting of percussion and strings, "Dancing On Soda Lake" is Kitz's most full-realized and captivating effort to date. With a recurring aqueous motif both lyrically and sonically, "Dancing On Soda Lake" captures this essence elegantly throughout the gentle impermanence of it's luminous song cycle, flowing freely back and forth between beauty and mystery, not unlike our own plasmic origins. Wren's sensitive vocal delivery drifts carefully between loose, rhythmic tempos and plucks of the guitar, punctuated by swells of percussion and heart-wrenching harmonies from the bass, cello, and violin. The oblique lyrics hint at a narrative, though never fully disclose their true intentions, utilizing abstractions in language to shroud meaning, the way that dusk envelops a landscape. Themes of confusion, isolation, and existentialism indicate that there is a distinct darkness buried in these songs - though it is not articulated through sonic aggression, but rather through mood by way of wistful melancholia and bittersweet recollection. The most intriguing aspect of Kitz's compositions is his ardent dedication to magnetic tape, unlocking its tangible and nostalgic qualities not only through recording, but through instrumental utilization as well. A dedicated field recorder, Wren's travels with his tape recorder yield a trove of extracted sonic memories that he is able to access in his songs through manipulation and collage. Wren captures literal moments from his life and recontextualizes them as musical elements, building textures and atmospheres from a faded reality, from subtle rustlings to roaring oceanic vastness. This blending of fidelities creates a very dynamic listen by constructing a hypnagogic tension between traditional songwriting and avant-garde experimentation. Travelin' Shoes Every now and again you get one of those discs that picks up a few threads that have long lain dormant for various reasons, and you are more than overjoyed that someone took the time to help make the reconnections that seem to make life richer. Little Smokey took the young -- and new to Chicago -- Elvin Bishop under his wing in the early '60s and taught the kid everything, from playing blues guitar to how to walk the walk. It is well-documented how Bishop's career took off when he hooked up with Paul Butterfield and Mike Bloomfield in the Butterfield Blues Band (setting the stage for all the other twin lead guitar bands such as the Allman Brothers Band that followed). Smokey remained in Chicago and virtually gave up trying to make a living playing music in favor of a job to support the family. With the kids grown, by the '80s he started playing again. In January 2000, the two hooked up again for three nights that would be recorded by Alligator. Maybe this was to say thank you for the early help; more likely -- judging by the playing -- it was a return of the early love between the two. It was more than worth the wait to hear the interplay of Elvin and Smokey, backed by a more-than-capable band (a nod to S.E. Willis on keyboards) that provides strong, solid support while letting the two stand to the forefront and play off each other. Bishop has always been known as a fun-loving musician; however, he takes his chops seriously, his playing is crisp, and -- as he shows here -- he is at his best when playing off an equal (listen to his signature "Travelin' Shoes"!). The joy of playing that deep-felt Chicago blues with an old friend and colleague and the chance for teacher and pupil to stand up and show off their licks and progress shine through here. The banter between the two helps to push the music along to greater heights. Just listen to this gutter-crawling version of Little Red Rooster. His guitar chops are impeccable, his tone clean without being thin, and his ability to whip off lick after astonishing lick in a variety of styles while still being his own man puts him at the forefront alongside any new breed innovators. With solid swinging support, Eaglin sounds relaxed and totally in command. His sideways spins on old chestnuts like "Hello Josephine" sound refreshing, while his nod to Smiley Lewis on "Down Yonder (We Go Ballin')" and "Lillie Mae" are spot-on treatments imbued with respect for an old New Orleans running buddy. His soulful reading of Dan Penn's "Nine Pound Steel" sets the stage for a couple of strange (on the surface) choices, the Isley Brothers' "It's Your Thing" and Stevie Wonder's "(Boogie On) Reggae Woman," which Eaglin totally stamps with the full-bore charm of his own personality. But if anyone truly doubts that Eaglin is not a serious bluesman to be reckoned with, one listen to the almost seven minutes of "Black Night" will dispel any such notions, even before the guitar solo hits.
