Stella Fiesta (3:41) With a fiddle in one hand and a guitar in the other, Cork based Clare Sands is a singer-songwriter, musician, composer, and music teacher. She performs in a variety of genres, her own material being a mixture of Blues & Folk. With deep roots in Northern Ireland and County Wexford, Clare started playing the fiddle at the age of four, learning tunes off her father Seamus on a weekly basis. As well as playing Traditional Irish Music from an early age with different family members, Clare also trained classically on the violin. Her mother Susan bought her a guitar in her early teens, and gave her a strong love of the Blues, playing legends like Muddy Waters and Eva Cassidy on the way to school. She soon found a love for song writing, and used whatever instruments that lay around the house like the guitar, the piano, the bodhr??n or the mandolin to accompany herself. Having spent the summer of 2013 gigging around New York City, Clare returned to Cork to finish her degree in Music and Italian in UCC. During her time there she has met fabulous musicians such as Aisling Urwin, a singer-songwriter and harpist hailing from Kenmare, Co. Kerry.Their Irish tour in April/May 2014 to promote Clare's debut single, 'Change Is A Comin' was hugely successful, having played 20 prestigious venues around the country, as well as venues across Holland and Germany. They subsequently released a 'Live in Charlies Bar' album, which Clare promoted on her tour of New York City during the summer of 2015. As well as playing in a Folk/Blues duo, Clare has a Jazz/Blues Quintet 'Clare Sands Quintet', plays in a Funk-Blues group in Cork City every week 'What's That Sound?' and various Traditional Irish music and Gypsy Jazz groups. Clare works as a full time music teacher and session musician playing with various Irish artists, Luka Bloom, Mundy, Anna Mitchell, Hank Wedel, John Blek, Dylan Howe, to name a few. Clare is also set to release her debut album 'Join me at the Table' October 7th, 2016 (Available worldwide on Itunes). I'm Leaving (4:08) Nate Turner was born in Baton Rouge, La. USA in 1937. At a very young age Nate moved to Hollandale, Mississippi and then finally to Miami, Florida where he was raised. Nate grew up with guitar players all around him. Friends of his father's would stop by and play with his dad almost every day. This is what started Nate in becoming interested in music. Nate used a wire from an old broom his mother had and nailed it against the house. He would imitate his father's friends. Sometimes he would get really creative and use a bottle to make a more hollow sound. The blues was a big part of Nate's beginning. This was his music of choice. Although he found the blues to be enchanting he also sang gospel every Sunday in this family's church. At the age of fifteen he was part of the church choir with five other young men. Nate started out singing baritone, and then second tenor and eventually he became the lead voice every Sunday. Nate's father was a huge force in them going to church. With this encouragement it started Nate on the road to becoming a successful singer. Later Nate was introduced to harmonica by next door neighbor of his. His neighbor played harmonica all the time and at first it bothered Nate, but instead of getting into an argument with him Nate decided one day to try out and see what he could do with it. When he picked it up he found out that he was a natural. Nate played the harmonica very well right away. This was his first full time instrument. Nate kept that harmonica on him all the time. One evening Nate ran into a band playing in the park. He asked them if they could use a harmonica player and with that Nate joined his first band. They played all around town. This was going great until the band decided they wanted a saxophone player instead of harmonica. They bought a saxophone and let Nate try to play it first. Nate learned one song called "Walk With Mr. Lee". This was Nate's only song he could play well on the saxophone. With Nate not doing well with the saxophone the band had another problem. They were not happy with the drummer. He was not holding up his end. The band came to a decision, with Nate not doing well on saxophone and the drummer not doing well on the drums they told them to switch instruments for a while to see what would happen. Switch they did and it worked out beautifully. The drummer found out that he had a gift on the saxophone and Nate found out how to keep everyone in line with his beats. Nate stayed with the drums and introduced his vocal talent with the band for about four more years. Then he left the band to find better work. At this time he fooled around with the guitar. He couldn't play much on it. Nate used to sit on his front steps and practice with it. One day a group of guys noticed him with the guitar and asked him if he could also play the bass, they were looking for a bass player right away to join their band. Nate said he could play bass and he would join up with them right away. Well at the first performance everyone found out that Nate was not good with the bass. He quickly shared bass guitar lessons with a friend of his. Nate watched the teacher and ended up learning more than his friend did. Soon he learned notes and tempos. One of his first songs he learned was "Stand By Me". He gradually became very successesful with his bass. Nate then moved from Miami to Chicago in 1965. He quickly got involved with Johnny Christian and Art "Shorty" Stalwell with the Chicago Playboys. He would sit in with them every chance he got until one night they hired him to play bass. Nate played with them for the next three years on the West Side and South-Side of Chicago. In 1967 Nate was noticed by Jimmy Dawkins and was invited to join them on Nate's first trip with the Stealer Band. They played the top 40, R&B and soul all over the U.S. Nate was also a big part of their hit record "Get It From the Bottom" on V.J. Records. Nate stayed with the band for a couple years and then moved on. After Jimmy Dawkins Nate found himself busy with one band after another. He was a freelancing bassist and went wherever he was needed. His first stop was Koko Taylor in 1969. Nate then worked with Big Ben around Chicago from 1970-1973. From here he joined forces with Lovey Lee in Chicago from 1974-1980. He was moving from band to band gaining more and more experience. Nate Turner has recorded with Lovey Lee on Blues On Blues records, Johnny Dollar on Blues R&B records, "The Professor" on Delmar Records and Abb Locke on Rooster Records. Nate has played with many of the greatest blues musicians today: Fenton Robinson, Junior Wells, Luther Johnson, Cary Bell and John Primer just to name a few. Through all of this he was never quit satisfied with any other of his bands. With all this in mind Nate decided to create his own band and become the bandleader. With his expertise and connections he formed Nate Turner's Windy City Blues Band in 1992. His first group of musicians included: Steve Bell on harmonica, Leon Lee on 2nd guitar, Arthur Ruth on lead guitar, Rick Howard on drums and Nate on bass and vocals. He took his band all over the U.S., Canada and Jamaica. With Nate being in charge of his own destiny he decided to go back to his roots and teach himself guitar. He had always dreamed of learning and mastering that instrument and now he finally has. Today The Windy City Blues Band has Nate Turner in charge and on guitar and lead vocals. They have years of experience, confidence and skill. You Had To Go [a Slight Return] Erin "Icewater" Jaimes came onto the Austin, Texas blues scene in late 1994, young and clueless, with a passion for the music. "If you play the blues, you're gonna end up living them," warned Erin's first serious musical mentor, drummer Jeff "Li'l Calvin" Hodges. Drummer "Uncle" John Turner, another major influence, often stated that "to some, blues is a state of mind. To others, it's a fact of life." (Little did she know how true their words were!) Listening to such artists as Koko Taylor, Dinah Washington, Etta James and Irma Thomas gave her an empowering but sobering look into a woman's survival in the blues - "a man's world." Erin didn't shy away - she embraced the challenge. The music had its hold on her. Having previously sung "bass" in an award-winning all-women's acapella group at Vassar College and loving the primal power of a solid rhythm section, Erin was drawn to the electric bass. Appa Perry (of Appa's Blues Power and the Alan Haynes band) was the first to tell her "instead of asking me all these questions all the time, why don't you go and get yourself a *#@$%! bass?!" She got her first bass the next day and learned to play over time largely by watching and listening to bassists such as Appa, Larry Fulcher, Danny Galindo, Tommy Shannon, Keith Ferguson, Willie Weeks and Willie Kent. On April Fools Day, 1998, she landed a weekly gig of her own at the legendary Joe's Generic Bar. Since 1998, getting muddy in the trenches of Austin's highly competitive music scene, Erin feels fortunate to have shared the stage with many remarkable musicians and Texas Blues legends, including Double Trouble, Antones' Blue Monday Band, Pinetop Perkins, Angela Strehli , Willie "Big Eye" Smith, Sue Foley, Hubert Sumlin, "Uncle" John Turner, John McVey, Alan Haynes, Mike and Cory Keller, Gary Clark Jr., Shawn Pittman, George Rarey, Guy Forsythe, Carolyn Wonderland and Barry "Frosty" Smith, to name a few. She's opened up for Gatemouth Brown, Johnny Winter, Jimmie Vaughan, Jimmie Thackery, Chris Duarte, Long John Hunter and Lavelle White, done live radio broadcasts and has made several TV appearances. Jaimes has played the stages of many Austin venues and toured throughout Texas, as well as in Louisiana, Missouri, Massachusetts, Oklahoma and Arkansas. She was featured at the 11th Annual Oklahoma Blues Festival (Tulsa, 5/05) with John McVey & the Stumble and at the Bluebonnet Blues Festival (4/06) with Walter Higgs. Internationally speaking, Erin Jaimes & her band played for a week on Ambergris Caye, Belize in May of 2004 and toured both Israel and Italy in the spring of 2005. Drummer/singer "Uncle" John Turner invited Erin to join him to play in Germany, Sweden and Denmark in May of 2006 and later that summer the US Consul to the Azores brought her with Scott Unzicker and Ian Bailey to play in the Portuguese Azores Islands. Bobby's music career began in 1995 as guitarist for the regional Virginia based touring band Puddleduck. After settling in, the constant songwriting began due to a ferocious love for music and inspiration from all the greats and regional songwriters like Jason Isbell, Ryan Adams, etc. In 2011, Bobby created The Rival Brothers, a full 5 piece band, and it clicked. With Bobby as the songwriter, The Brothers started recording and playing shows. They created the EP "SAY" which created an immediate buzz with local venues and radio stations followed by a full year of unforgettable live shows. Last year The Rival Brothers creatively went in their own directions. The music was last available as a two-LP set also titled Skins. The 1964 session, oddly programmed first, finds Santamaria on conga and bongos at the head of a ten-piece band also including trumpeter Marty Sheller, then-unknown flutist Hubert Laws (also featured on piccolo and tenor), Bobby Capers on alto and baritone, and a seven-piece rhythm section with five percussionists. Cornetist Nat Adderley guests on three of the ten numbers, which are all group originals, including four songs from Sheller. The early dates (Mongo's first as the leader of a fairly jazz-oriented Latin group) have Santamaria leading a completely different band, a nonet with just three percussionists. Most notable among the personnel are the young Chick Corea on piano and Pat Patrick, on leave from Sun Ra's band, as one of the two saxophonists. This time around, Mongo contributed four of the nine fairly obscure numbers. Although some of the songs on the 1964 date were put together in hopes of duplicating the commercial success of "Watermelon Man" (none succeeded), the music still sounds fairly fresh and lively. An excellent introduction to Mongo Santamaria's viable brand of Afro-Cuban jazz.
